Meyer characterizes current approaches to diagnose, manage and study cardiac angiosarcoma

welcome to OncLiveOn Air®! I’m your host today, Jason Harris.

OncLiveOn Air® is a podcast of OncLive®, which provides oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care. In digital and printed format, OncLive® covers all aspects of oncology practice, from new technologies and therapeutic advances to important regulatory decisions.

In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Christian Frederick Meyer, MD, PhD, MS, Chief Medical Oncologist for Adult Sarcoma Patients at Johns Hopkins University.

Cardiac angiosarcoma has been in the news since the death of famous fashion designer Virgil Abloh in November 2021. Cardiac angiosarcoma is a very rare subset of an already rare disease. Dr Meyer said that out of about 700 angiosarcomas diagnosed in the United States each year, about 50 of them will be cardiac angiosarcomas.

The disease is difficult to detect in its early stages. Most patients have advanced metastatic disease and survival is poor. Although most patients undergo surgery, there is no standard of care and treatments are borrowed from treatment regimens for other sarcomas.

In our interview, Dr Meyer explained why he views chemotherapy as an essential part of the treatment regimen for eligible patients and why he believes immunotherapy has the potential to transform care for patients with cardiac angiosarcoma.
