Youtube Music makes background listening free, could be linked to possible Google Podcast merger

Listening to your music with your phone screen turned off in the Youtube app was once free. It was just a natural part of the app experience circa 2013, but once Google separated the music listening experience into its own app, it got placed behind a paywall. Now it’s free again for some reason.

Canada will be the first to experience this update as of Nov. 3, 2021, with “additional information and expansion plans” to come, according to the Youtube Blog. As a result, the US, UK and other regions will get this capability shortly thereafter.

You might be wondering why it is getting free and why now. While we don’t really have a clue at this point in the process, I have a pretty good guess – Podcasts. That’s right, with all the vague clues that Youtube can absorb Google’s podcasts or at least attempt to improve the podcast experience on its own platform with listening controls and a new framework recently loaded with. organize and strategize around the multitude of them. there, free background listening seems like a dead giveaway.

What better way to listen to podcasts – a format that is hardly visual at all – than with your screen turned off? To me, it doesn’t seem likely that the armies of users who wanted this feature to be free were accepted by Google when the company is making a lot of money from it. What do you think of all this? More importantly, would you like Google Podcasts to merge with Youtube or Youtube Music? It looks like the Music app would be the perfect place for them as they would have more exposure, and you can switch between video and audio only modes, allowing the company to bulk import and have them done. feel at home. . Oh, and don’t forget podcasts were previously built right into Google Play Music, and we all know how much Google likes to come full circle on its decisions and design implementation after just a few years.
